School Life
First Grade
Math - In match, three branches are included in grade one. They are arithmetic, measurement and geometry. Basic addition and subtraction combinations for sums through 18 are developed. Place value concepts are introduced and students learn to read and write numbers to 100. Measurement of money, time, weight and line segments are also introduced.
Reading - The two main characteristics of a reading program are continuous instruction throughout the grades and continuity of instruction from grade to grade. The child who has mastered the alphabet and phonetic sounds is starting on the path to reading. Through use of phonic charts, language experience, sight word charts, basic readers, workbooks and exercise sheets, he is beginning to develop the basic skills in reading. Audiovisual aids assist the child in reinforcing these skills. We look for decoding skills, study skills, comprehension abilities and creativity. Literary understanding and appreciation are also incorporated in the reading program.
First Grade is probably the most important year in a child's development as the basic skills for all to follow are taught here. In addition, study habits and skills are usually formed at this age and will carry with the child into his/her future. Extreme care is taken to ensure that all the children learn to enjoy school to ensure long term success.
