Academic Curriculum
Math - The math program that will be covered in the third grade is a continuation of the work in grade two with the addition of working with numbers greater than 1000, money, time and Roman numerals. Regrouping ones, tens and hundreds in addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division of whole numbers through 9 is introduced. An introduction to fractions and fractional numbers occurs in the third grade program. Having children begin to think objectively is accomplished more naturally in arithmetic than in any other area curriculum.
Reading - The children are again grouped according to their needs and abilities. Each level is concerned with the development of study skills, vocabulary, comprehension, literature and creativity. The phonics area builds upon material presented in grade one. The use of the dictionary is taught with all its facets. Encyclopedias are used in conjunction with reference work. The use of the dictionary and encyclopedia is taught with the Ginn Reading Series. Map reading skills using local and world maps are introduced.
